Ashley VanGemeren is a visual artist, hailing from Central Maryland, earning her BFA in Fine Art from the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design/George Washington University in 2015. Specializing in mixed media, she creates intuitive, low-relief paintings on canvas as well as collages on paper using a combination of traditional and non-traditional materials. Throughout her works, VanGemeren uses the relationship between color and texture as a vehicle to communicate her experiences with romantic relationships and mental illness. She resonates with the performative process behind Jackson Pollock’s works, as well as, the conceptual properties adapted by Jason Martin.
Since 2012, VanGemeren has been an active participant in various group shows including Out of Order (Baltimore, MD), Collector’s Choice (Camarillo, CA), New Beginnings (Longmont, CO), and SIAMO QUEL CHE MANGIAMO? Sustenance and Art (Milan, Italy). She was awarded the Gold Award by ArtAscent Magazine in 2016, and became a featured artist a part of Transformer Gallery's FlatFile Program (Washington, DC).
In June 2017, VanGemeren completed a 2-week Creator Residency program at UNRULY Collective. During her stay, she created a truly moving body of work that is being shown at the UNRULY Gallery and site. She studied alongside UNRULY founders Hillary Megroz & Charles Pastore, UNRULY Creators, Anton Vitkovisky & Igor Sokol, and many of Bushwick's infamous creative locals!
